Drought and climate change are two of the main challenges facing viticulture in Catalonia, especially in the Penedès region. To address this issue, the MANSO task force (Soil and vineyard management for drought mitigation) has been launched, aiming to develop sustainable soil and water management strategies to ensure the future of the wine sector.
The project, coordinated by the Catalan wine cluster INNOVI, involves the participation of five wineries from Penedès: Bodegues Sumarroca, Celler Kripta, Juvé & Camps, Masia Vallformosa, and Llopart. These wineries will provide plots with different characteristics to test and compare various management techniques.
Additionally, the project collaborates with two other leading research centers: INCAVI (Catalan Institute of Vine and Wine) and the Faculty of Oenology at Rovira i Virgili University.
These institutions will contribute their scientific expertise to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed strategies and facilitate the transfer of results to the wine sector. The project is also supported by the Cava Producers Association (AECAVA).
MANSO will last for two years (2024-2026) and will be carried out in different vineyard plots in Penedès. The selection of these plots has been based on their diversity in terms of soil type, slope, vine varieties, and the presence or absence of supplementary irrigation, ensuring that the results can be applied to other wine-growing regions.
This initiative represents a great opportunity to develop innovative solutions and adapt the wine sector to new climate scenarios. Through research, collaboration, and the application of new practices, MANSO will contribute to building a more sustainable and resilient model for the vineyard of the future.
