This project aims to promote a sustainable and demonstrative model for the valorisation of livestock manure in the agricultural sector, based on the principles of the circular bioeconomy. The initiative seeks to transform these by-products into value-added resources, such as biogas, recovered water and organic fertilisers, thereby contributing to more efficient nutrient management and reducing the environmental impact of livestock farming.
The project will support the deployment of new biogas and livestock manure valorisation plants and other organic waste, while also promoting applied research into biogas production and the development of fertiliser products based on digestate. This approach will allow for progress towards more circular, resilient and sustainable production systems.
The project is primarily focused on the province of Tarragona, a territory with a strong presence of the agri-food and livestock sectors. Furthermore, it has a strategic infrastructure comprising a farm, a biogas plant, a treatment plant for the liquid fraction of the digestate, and the IRTA facilities in Constantí, which will serve as a platform for research, demonstration and validation of new technologies. The results obtained will be extrapolable to other types of organic waste complementary to livestock manure.
The expected impacts include the technological validation of integrated systems for biogas production and digestate water recovery, the demonstration of operating costs under real-world conditions, a life cycle analysis of the facilities, and strengthening Tarragona’s position as a reference territory in the circular bioeconomy.
The project’s innovative character lies in the use of recovered water from the digestate for agricultural purposes and for cleaning the farms, in closing nutrient cycles, and in the development of new fertiliser products based on digestate. This approach allows for the advancement towards the integral valorisation of livestock manure, generating new resources and opportunities for the agri-food sector.
