MICROGEL - Efficacy and efficiency of various micro-spraying systems for active spring frost defence in fruit trees

This project will demonstrate, from a practical perspective and under commercial production conditions, the main characteristics and operational factors of various systems for combating spring frosts in fruit trees based on the application of water via micro-sprinklers.

As a key element of the project, two pilot demonstration facilities will be set up on fruit orchard plots (stone and pome fruit) equipped with the main micro-sprinkler alternatives for frost protection. On these plots, in the event of spring frosts during high-risk periods, the systems will be operated and the results of each will be measured, both in terms of temperature gain and effectiveness in protecting flowers or fruit.

Similarly, during the winter season, and under favourable weather conditions, the installations will be put into operation and the thermal performance of each system will be measured.

Finally, the results will be shared with the sector through talks at fruit-growing conferences, site visits and a visual report detailing the project’s progress, the results obtained and the conclusions that can be drawn.
