According to the Third Report on Climate Change in Catalonia, average temperatures could increase by up to 4°C, alongside a more irregular pattern of rainfall. This considerable rise in temperature raises concerns about the future sustainability of some of the country’s main fruit crops. In recent years, heatwaves have caused significant impacts on fruit quality. In pear orchards, for example, a worrying increase in the number of dried leaves has been observed. Furthermore, the fact that 2023 was confirmed as the hottest year ever recorded to date makes it essential to analyse carefully the potential consequences of this situation for the accumulation of chill hours in the future.
The main objective of this project is to provide objective data that will improve our understanding of the key agronomic parameters likely to be affected by climate change, with the aim of supporting the adaptation of our fruit crops to the conditions of the 21st century.
