Josep Usall y Rodié (Alguaire, 1966) es el director general del Instituto de Investigación y Tecnología Agroalimentarias (IRTA) desde 2018. Es ingeniero técnico agrícola (Universidad Politécnica de Cataluña, UPC, 1984-1987), ingeniero agrónomo (9) internacional (cámara de comercio de Terrassa 1991-92) y doctor ingeniero agrónomo por la Universidad de Lleida (1995).

Vinculado desde 1992 al IRTA como investigador en patologías de la postcosecha, ha ejercido varios cargos de gestión: fue el coordinador del programa Protección Vegetal Sostenible (2009-2012), director del Servicio técnico de postcosecha (2002-2018), jefe del programa de Postcosecha (18) general. Además, entre 2011 y 2018 coordinó el programa Fruit.Net, que tiene el objetivo de optimizar la aplicación de productos fitosanitarios y la reducción del derroche de la fruta en Cataluña.

Entre 1994 y 2011 compaginó su actividad investigadora con la dirección del Centro de Cooperación Internacional de la Universidad de Lleida (UdL).

Su investigación se inició con el desarrollo de agentes de control biológico para las principales enfermedades de las frutas de pepita. Más adelante, amplió el alcance de su investigación incluyendo otras estrategias de control como tratamientos físicos o químicos de bajo riesgo. En los últimos años, su investigación se ha focalizado en desarrollar modelos epidemiológicos de las principales enfermedades de la fruta, en especial la Monilia en fruta de hueso, así como estudios de patogénesis y resistencia de Penicillium y Monilia basados ​​en la genómica.

Ha publicado cerca de 200 artículos científicos en revistas indexadas, ha escrito doce capítulos de libro y unos setenta artículos divulgativos, ha colaborado en la edición de diez libros, tiene tres patentes y ha pronunciado más de 150 comunicaciones en congresos nacionales e internacionales. Ha sido el director del Curso Internacional de Poscosecha del IRTA.

Ha realizado estancias de investigación en el Appalachian Fruit Research Station (ARS-USDA, EE.UU.), en el Horticultural Crops Research Laboratory (ARS-USDA, EE.UU.), en la Universidade do Algarve (Portugal), en el Ruakura Research Center (HortResearch – Nueva Zelanda) y en la University of California-Davis.
