In recent years, there have been incidents of contamination of public water supplies with active ingredients used for weed control in maize, primarily S-motolachlor and terbuthylazine.
In this context, the aim of the demonstration activity is to reduce herbicide use in this crop by promoting innovative strategies for weed control, including mechanical weeding with precision hoes, the application of herbicides in specific strips, and the planting of companion or cover crops. In the latter case, the cover crop will be chopped, controlled with herbicide or utilised as fodder, after which the maize will be sown using direct drilling or strip-till. During 2025, experimental plots and farmers’ fields will be established to test the various strategies. The results obtained will be disseminated to the farming sector through field and classroom workshops, publications and other means.
