The Best-Date project, developed by IRTA, has been recognized as one of the top 20 innovations of 2024 in the Big Consumption sector. This tool assists food manufacturers in determining whether a product should carry an expiry date or a preferred consumption date. The Observatory of Innovation in Large Consumption, led by the Cerdà Institute, selected this project after evaluating more than 350 innovative initiatives.
Each year, tons of perfectly edible food are discarded due to inadequate labeling of its shelf life. The Best-Date tool, developed by IRTA, provides a science-based solution to help manufacturers determine the most accurate labeling for their products in compliance with current regulations. This not only helps reduce food waste but also enhances clarity and safety for consumers.
BestDate has been an activity funded through Operation 01.02.01 of Technological Transfer of the Rural Development Program of Catalonia 2014-2022.
IRTA's recognition in the 8th edition of the Observatory underscores the vital role of research centers and their contribution to the agri-food sector. Among the 20 projects selected in 2024, five come from R&D&i entities, highlighting the importance of research in driving the sector’s transition toward more sustainable and efficient models. In light of this, the IRTA research team behind the Best-Date project expresses its gratitude to the Cerdà Institute for this distinction.
Additionally, this recognition will help drive the market adoption of Best-Date, supporting a more responsible agri-food sector aligned with the European Union’s sustainability go.
