The reserves of organic carbon in the agricultural soils of Catalonia are available from the ICGC website

>>The ICGC’s GeoIndex-Soil app has been updated to include this new feature thanks to a partnership agreement involving the Institute of Agrifood Research and Technology (IRTA).

The GeoIndex-Soil viewer at the website of the Cartography and Geology of Catalonia (ICGC) has been updated with to include an Organic Carbon Stock Map covering the 30 cm surface area of the agricultural soils of Catalonia.

This new information allows a better knowledge of the organic carbon reserves in agricultural soils in Catalonia, which is the foundation for the study of the feasibility of climate change mitigation strategies, such as the 4 per 1000 initiative, in which the IRTA also participates. The purpose of this initiative is to ensure annual growth of 4% in carbon stocks in agricultural and forest soils as a way to improve fertility and agricultural production and, at the same time, fight against the increase in the concentration of CO2 (Carbon Dioxide, a greenhouse gas) in the atmosphere related to human activities.

This initiative is the result of a partnership agreement between IRTA, the ICGC, the Ecological and Forestry Applications Research Centre (CREAF), the Forest Science and Technology Centre of Catalonia (CTFC) and the Department of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Food of the Government of Catalonia (DARP).
