This proposal aims to address one of the most strategic challenges faced by the new bread wheat
(Triticum aestivum L.) varieties to be released in Spain in the next decades: adaptation to climate
change, which, in terms of crop performance under Mediterranean conditions we assume to mostly refer
to resistance to early (in the winter with water shortages in December and January) and terminal
drought stress, considering it as a combination of water scarcity and increased temperatures during the
grain filling period and resistance to main diseases to occur as consequence of climate change, with a
grain matching the industry quality requirements.
