The reduction in water availability caused by climate change is one of the main threats to agriculture, particularly for flooded crops such as rice. To adapt to this water scarcity, various alternative irrigation systems have been proposed, such as intermittent irrigation or mid-season drainage.

Even so, these strategies, designed to maximise water savings, can have side effects on other key agronomic aspects, such as increased salinity and water stress in the crop, or weed control, factors that are particularly limiting for rice in the Ebro Delta. To identify which water management strategies best reconcile all these aspects, it is first necessary to understand the possible trade-offs between them.

For this reason, this demonstration activity has been designed, in which three different irrigation management approaches will be compared in rice fields, monitoring the physicochemical characteristics of the soil, the biomass of the different weed species, and crop yield. The aim is to quantify the impact of water management on the crop and to raise awareness of the strategies that best combine adaptation to water scarcity, weed control, and agricultural productivity. In this way, farmers will be able to assess which strategy best suits their growing conditions.
