Humane stunning of finfish: demonstrate, validate & faciliate market uptake

The project focuses on electrical stunning in high through-put finfish industries where current methods are poor. EEG techniques will be updated to improve their reliability and practicality. Generic issues that limit the application of electric stunning will be addressed. For four species of fish for which humane stunning equipment is not widely available, we will identify and validate stun parameters and check carcass quality. Commercial sized machines will be developed and placed in commercial processing plants for a period of months to gather valid operational and carcass quality data, to enable the industry to experience the benefits and to assist in promotion of the concept.
