BestDate is an open access web application for companies and food professionals to determine whether a packaged food requires a “expiry” or “best before” date.

The BestDate App allows, by applying risk-based scientific criteria, to determine whether a packaged food requires a expiry date or whether the best-before date is appropriate. Date marking is one of the factors associated with some of the food wastage, and the application and proper use of date marking helps to reduce it. The tool will be available on the websites of IRTA, DACC and the Catalan Food Safety Agency. It has been developed in Catalan, Spanish and English, and is intended to be internationalised.
