    Marine and continental waters

We monitor the state of rivers, wetlands, estuaries and coastal areas and their resources to achieve a productive and environmentally friendly activity. We develop analytical methods, biochemical assays and biosensors to identify pathogens, microalgae, toxic substances, toxins and other natural compounds and pollutants to monitor the state of the marine environment and its resources. We also assess the impact of climate change on Mediterranean and continental coastal aquatic ecosystems, including rice paddies, and the implementation of mitigation measures to optimize the carbon balance.

Centers where the program works

SHARE

  • Food safety

We analyze water quality in mussel and oyster harvesting areas to ensure food safety.

  • Marine toxins

We detect toxic phytoplankton, study the dynamics of their populations and evaluate the concentration of marine toxins.

  • Ecology of aquatic systems

We use bioindicators to monitor the ecological quality of aquatic ecosystems.

  • Conservation

We promote the conservation and reintroduction of endangered species in the Ebre delta and river and control and eradicate invasive species.

  • Climate change

We propose climate change mitigation measures in the coastal system and in the agroecosystems to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote carbon sequestration.

  • Delta study

We assess environmental and human changes in Mediterranean deltas in the long term.
