A great recognition of his contributions to fish nutrition and the development of more sustainable aquaculture.

In celebration of World Oceans Day, the Marine Research Centre (CIM) at the University of Vigo has announced that it is awarding the CIM prize to researcher Enric Gisbert, head of the IRTA Aquaculture Programme at its centre in La Ràpita (Tarragona).

This award recognises Gisbert's contributions to sustainable aquaculture, particularly in the study of feed and nutrition for farmed fish and its effect on the condition and overall health of the animals. "Dr Gisbert's contributions are a source of inspiration for our research staff. His leadership, capacity for innovation and commitment to knowledge transfer are a model to be emulated", said Daniel Rey, director of the CIM, in relation to the award recognising the career of an international leader in aquaculture research.

Gisbert himself acknowledges that "it is a great joy, because when you decide to devote your life to research, you can never imagine that your work will be recognised at a national level. These awards serve to look back and remember all those people who, in one way or another, have influenced me scientifically along the way and without whom I might not be where I am today."

The award ceremony will take place during the III Annual CIMentos Assembly, to be held in Vigo on 23 October 2025.

A career dedicated to innovation in aquaculture

After completing postdoctoral research at the University of California Davis and Ifremer in Brest, he joined IRTA in 2004 on a Ramon y Cajal contract. There, he leads a research group focused on fish nutrition and its impact on animal health and condition, as well as the development of functional diets in close collaboration with the aquaculture sector. His line of work also focuses on understanding how the conditions in which larvae are reared and fed influence the development of the organism, particularly the digestive and skeletal systems, with the aim of improving the quality of larvae in aquaculture and promoting the sustainability and efficiency of their production.

Enric Gisbert is a member of the Nutrition and Feeding Specialist Group and the Larviculture Specialist Group of the World Aquaculture Society (WAS). He is also associate editor of the scientific journals Frontiers in Physiology and Fish Physiology and Biochemistry, among others. With more than 240 scientific publications and an H-index of 44, the IRTA researcher has become a leading figure in the field of international aquaculture.
