  • The Reus City Council is promoting the PECT NUTRISALT project involving the following R&D&I agents in the region: The IRTA, Rovira i Virgili University (URV), the URV Foundation and EURECAT.

  • Within the framework of this project, the IRTA will create a Cooking Lab, an experimental kitchen providing a service with studies, training and experiences in oil and nut products in the industries and restaurants of the Camp de Tarragona region.

The PECT NUTRISALT project was presented this Tuesday at the EURECAT head offices. This is a project designed to transform and revitalize the agri-food sector in Reus and the Camp de Tarragona area, with the aim of providing innovative, safe, healthy and sustainable food.

The IRTA is participating in this project, specifically with the future construction of a Cooking Lab, an experimental kitchen specializing in oils and nuts. This Cooking Lab will also be an interpretative centre, keeping collections of olive and nut varieties to be made available to agri-food industries and restaurants in Tarragona. In fact, one of its functions will be to respond to scientific questions about the properties of these foods and to interact with kitchen professionals by means of different experiences and workshops. The Cooking Lab will be constructed on the premises of the IRTA Mas Bové centre in Constantí.

An innovation hub in the field of nutrition and health

The aim of the project is to convert Reus and the Camp de Tarragona region and their area of influence into an international hub of nutritional and health activity, leading innovation and development in this area in southern Europe. In this regard, the specialization strategy of Reus and the Camp de Tarragona area in nutrition and health seeks to consolidate the region as a specialized innovation hub, very much like the Food Valley in Wageningen (Holland), a European benchmark in this field.

The Reus City Council is promoting the PECT (Territorial Specialization and Competitiveness Project) involving the following R&D&I agents in the area: The IRTA, Rovira i Virgili University (URV), the URV Foundation and EURECAT. It also receives the cooperation of the business community, especially that of the AINS Nutrition and Health Cluster and different town councils in the Camp de Tarragona region. With an action plan set to continue until 2020, it has a budget of €1,924,619, receiving 50% of its funding from the ERDF Operational Programme for Catalonia and 25% from Tarragona Provincial Council.

The PECT NUTRISALT project complements several local and regional strategic plans such as the Regional Smart Specialization Strategy (RIS3CAT), which identifies the food sector as the primary strategic sector for the Catalan economy in the coming years. The PECT NUTRISALT project integrates and complements the objectives of the participating institutions and constitutes an opportunity to move forward as a region.
