European microalgae alliance: innovative, safe, and sustainable multi-product biorefineries for a blue biobased economy

The current challenge towards a biobased, sustainable, profitable, and circular algae industry for these food, feed, and commodity products is the production cost and market volume, limiting the widespread commercialization of microalgae-based products. ALLIANCE ambition is to overcome the current limitations by defining a novel integrated approach to the whole microalgae value chain using a multiproduct biorefinery (MPB) strategy to advance the bioeconomy of microalga-based products effectively, encompassing: i) sustainable and circular production strategies, ii) biorefinery of biomass into multiple mid-value ingredients, iii) a broader range of bioproducts for cellular agriculture, foods and beverages, bio-pest control, and aquafeed industries, and iv) improved social & consumer acceptance of products
