The collective platform Nactiva has launched the Favaprot project, aimed at the production of vegetable protein from the cultivation of broad beans. To this end, it has created an operational group that brings together key players from the entire agri-food value chain, from farmers to distributors: Actel, Semillas Fitó, Almendro Origen, Flax & Kale, Akis International and the Institute of Agri-Food Research and Technology (IRTA). The aim is to promote the creation of an integrated value chain for the production, processing and distribution of sustainable, local and high quality plant-based foodstuffs. In this first phase, Favaprot applied for a call for proposals from the Catalan government and was awarded a grant valued at 283,000 euros.
The project has carried out its first experimental sowing with 11 varieties of broad beans in La Tallada d’Empordà, Fornells de la Selva and Zumos, with good results in the germination of the different varieties. In addition, 6 demonstration plots have been established in Gerona and Lérida to evaluate the adaptability of broad beans in different agro-climatic conditions. Tests are also being carried out on the best sowing dates and densities to optimise production and improve the sustainability of the crop.
These territories have been strategically selected to evaluate the performance of different commercial and experimental varieties of broad beans and to develop innovative agricultural practices that boost the sustainability and competitiveness of the sector.
Following an initial study carried out by Nactiva, broad beans have been selected as the main crop for the project due to their multiple advantages: high protein content (between 20% and 30%) with a lysine-rich profile, their ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen – which improves soil health and reduces the need for chemical fertilisers – and their lower meat footprint. Furthermore, the cultivation of broad beans contributes to the diversification of cereal farms, increasing their sustainability and has low greenhouse gas emissions.
