The main objective of this demonstration project is to demonstrate the effectiveness of using kaolin to control Bactrocera oleae, the olive fly, in Catalonia, as part of an integrated pest management programme for olive trees.
Olive cultivation and olive production in Catalonia are of great socio-economic importance. The olive fly Bactrocera oleae is the most important pest affecting this crop, causing direct damage by feeding on the olive fruit and indirect damage by promoting the proliferation of fungi and bacteria within the galleries, which reduce the quality of the oil. Its control is based on the application of adulticide and larvicide insecticides. Kaolin is white, hydrophilic and chemically inert hydrated aluminium silicate. It forms a protective film that repels adults by irritation, concealment and disorientation, preventing the treated olive from being selected by the female for oviposition. The effectiveness of kaolin requires efficient application with good coverage of the tree. The inclusion of kaolin applications in integrated management would reduce environmental risks, the development of resistance and the presence of toxic residues.
