Acronym: AQUATOX
The One Health approach involves an accurate evaluation of natural and anthropogenic contaminants present in the environment, and their impact on the health of people, animals, plants and ecosystems. AQUATOX, which includes staff from CSIC-IDAEA and IRTA, has evolved into a research group that has a unique potential for the evaluation of these compounds in aquatic ecosystems, with the most powerful and accurate instrumental analysis approaches, and complementary analytical techniques including biochemical assays, biosensors and cell-based toxicological assays. The group, which in the past mainly focused on microalgal toxins in the environment, is now incorporating anthropogenic contaminants, widening the expected impact. Our results include, as examples, the identification of novel toxins, the development of biosensors for neurotoxins or the analysis of pesticides and DPBs, and the non-target analysis by mass spectrometry of water, sediments biota and food.
