Strategies for managing motherhood and weaning in organic pig production to increase welfare and sustainability

The specific objectives of this demonstration activity will be:
1-Evaluate the effect of providing different nesting materials (straw or shavings) in different areas of the brood in the behavior and well-being of the sow and the mortality and welfare rate of the piglets.
2-Evaluate the effect of differentiated nest management (directed learning on nest use vs. voluntary entry) in free farrowing in organic production on the neonatal mortality rate and welfare in piglets.
3-Evaluate the effect of socialization in the maternity phase in joint lactation, or weaning in small groups vs. large group, in the growth, physiology and well-being of piglets.
4-Develop training materials in relation to joint maternity-weaning strategies to improve resilience, survival, well-being and sustainability in organic pig production.
