Facilities and equipment:

Feed Mill:

    • Feed production for research and innovation in feed manufacturing technology and animal nutrition.
    • Development of new products in collaboration with companies.
    • We have two independent production lines: one for ruminants and another one for poultry, swine, and aquaculture.
    • Production capacity of up to 2,500 kg/h.
  • Allows reproduction of all typical processes with the same feed manufacturing characteristics as at an industrial scale.
  • Production of small feed batches of 200 kg — ideal for experimental feeds or when the availability of the experimental product to be tested is limited.

In addition, IRTA Mas Bové has different experimental farms:

 

Poultry:

  • Building A: 48 floor pens with a total capacity of 1,920 broilers.
  • Buildings B and C: 2 rooms with 24 pens each, for broilers or turkeys.
  • Building D: 56 floor pens for up to 2,240 broilers.
  • Buildings E, F, and G: 3 rooms for laying hens with enriched cages, 72 lots per room, and a total of 576 hens per room.
  • Building H: equipped with 72 enriched cages for digestibility studies.
  • Buildings I and J: 2 multipurpose rooms for studies with broilers or turkeys. Depending on use, they can hold a maximum of 1,300 broilers or 468 turkeys.
  • Buildings K and L: two rooms equipped with enriched cages for digestibility studies with laying hens, allowing studies with a total of 144 animals.
  • Building N: 24 floor pens for up to 600 broilers.
  • Building S: 48 floor pens for a maximum of 1,440 animals.

 

Swine:

We have a closed production cycle, meaning we produce our own piglets. The genetic line is (Landrace × Large White) × Pietrain.

  • Insemination area: 54 individual stalls for sows to facilitate insemination.
  • Gestation area: 2 free-access gestation pens with capacity for 50 sows, equipped with automatic feeding systems for individual feed intake control.
  • Farrowing area: 5 rooms:
    • Rooms 1, 2, 3, and 4: 10 places each
    • Room 5: 6 places
  • Nursery (Weaning/Transition):
    • Rooms 1, 3, and 5: 24 pens, 4 piglets per pen.
    • Rooms 2, 4, and 5: 12 pens each, 4 piglets per pen.
    • Modular barn, with 12, 24, or 48 pens and a maximum capacity of 94 animals.
  • Gilt Development Unit: building with 15 pens for gilt replacement and adaptation, equipped with an automatic feeding system for training.

 

Digestibility facilities:

  • Room 1: 12 individual cages for fattening pigs.
  • Room 2: 16 double cages for weaned piglets.

 

Fattening units:

  • Building 144: one group housing room with 36 pens for a total of 144 animals.
  • Building 128: group housing with 16 pens for a total of 128 animals.
  • Building 192: 48 pens with a total of 192 animals. This building can also be adapted to house sows when individualized feeding is required.
  • Building 72: 72 individual pens.
