In fact, we already live in a new climate context. In Catalonia, this new context means <strong>periods of intense drought<\/strong>, like the one we experienced in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:20px\">Water scarcity <strong>compromises the agri-food sector<\/strong>: when there is drought, supplying the population is the priority, and all economic activities come into play in the distribution of this resource. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:40%\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:20px\">Very careful management of water is needed in all areas, along with <strong>collective governance <\/strong>that takes into account all the actors in the territory and anticipates how to act in the event of drought.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:20px\">Likewise, climate change brings <strong>recurrent episodes of sudden, heavy rainfall<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:20px\">The water from these torrential rains is of little use and does not offset <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irta.cat\/en\/efficient-water-management-agriculture-catalonia-holistic\/\">the chronic scarcity affecting Catalonia<\/a>, especially the internal basins, where 90% of the population lives and 40% of the water is found.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:20px\">Likewise, storms and floods can damage infrastructure, crops and the land.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-stretch is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:40%\"><div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default fade-in\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irta.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/resiliencia-5-es-el-canal-urgell.jpeg\" class=\"fancybox irta-lightbox-bridge\" data-fancybox=\"irta-images\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1239\" src=\"https:\/\/www.irta.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/resiliencia-5-es-el-canal-urgell.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-137530\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.irta.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/resiliencia-5-es-el-canal-urgell.jpeg 1920w, https:\/\/www.irta.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/resiliencia-5-es-el-canal-urgell-300x194.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.irta.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/resiliencia-5-es-el-canal-urgell-1024x661.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/www.irta.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/resiliencia-5-es-el-canal-urgell-768x496.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.irta.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/resiliencia-5-es-el-canal-urgell-1536x991.jpeg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:82%\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:20px\">In the case of the land, <strong>many agricultural soils <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irta.cat\/en\/agriculture-health-soil-regenerative-carbon\/\">have lost organic matter and biodiversity<\/a><\/strong> after decades of intensive production. As a result, they are less able to retain moisture and carbon, which escapes into the atmosphere and becomes a greenhouse gas.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:85%\">\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-text-color has-link-color class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:40%\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:20px\">The new climate reality also brings <strong>sustained peaks of high temperatures<\/strong>, which can cause significant crop losses and test the ability of plants and of land and marine animals to adapt. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:20px\">In addition, it can change where and how certain <strong>pests and diseases<\/strong> affecting food appear. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:20px\">In this context, the word <strong>resilience<\/strong>, that is, the capacity to adapt, is key throughout the agri-food chain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:20px\"><strong>Examples<\/strong> of resilience initiatives include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"font-size:20px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irta.cat\/noticia\/tutti-una-alternativa-de-cultiu-per-a-la-poma-adaptada-als-climes-calids-2\/\">Co-creating plant varieties <\/a>that adapt well to the new climate conditions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:20px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irta.cat\/en\/agriculture-health-soil-regenerative-carbon\/\">Promoting soil health<\/a> through regenerative style=\"font-size:20px\">They therefore have a direct impact on <strong>climate change<\/strong>, due to the emission of greenhouse gases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:20px\">They also affect <strong>our health and that of ecosystems<\/strong>, through the emission of polluting compounds into soils and waters, and through the greater or lesser ease of access to a healthy diet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:20px\">In fact, food systems are considered to be, globally, <strong>one of the main drivers behind the transgression of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stockholmresilience.org\/research\/planetary-boundaries.html\">planetary boundaries<\/a><\/strong>, the 9 key processes for the stability of the Earth.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:85%\">\n<div style=\"height:60px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center style=\"flex-basis:80%\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:20px\">Given that both the Catalan and global populations are expected to keep growing, and adding to this that we live in a new climate context, we need to be able to <strong>produce more food with fewer<\/strong> resources and generating fewer polluting emissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:20px\">In other words, we need to <strong>intensify production sustainably.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:40%\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:20px\">And sustainability has three pillars that must reinforce one another: <strong>the economy, the environment and society<\/strong>. Thus:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"font-size:20px\">It must be possible to produce food <strong>profitably and with wellbeing<\/strong>. This includes the coexistence of economically viable and diverse agri-food models, a closer connection between the urban and rural worlds, and policies that foster generational renewal in the primary sector.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:20px\">At the same time, <strong>the economy and the environment must go hand in hand<\/strong>: economic benefit must be linked to the promotion of the circular economy and, in particular, the bioeconomy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:20px\">And it is necessary to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irta.cat\/en\/alternative-protein-sources-catalonia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>diversify protein sources<\/u><\/a><\/strong> to reduce the environmental impact of their production and distribution and to promote balanced diets.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-stretch is-layout-flow href=\"https:\/\/www.irta.cat\/en\/biological-risks-emergent-pests-diseases-one-health\/\">the emergence and spread of pests and infectious diseases around the world<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:20px\">These are <strong>biological risks<\/strong> that can affect people, animals and plants, and be transmitted from one to another.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:40%\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:20px\">They can therefore have a direct impact on food safety, animal and plant health, the agri-food economy and public health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:20px\">As a result of this situation, the concept of \u2018<strong>One Health\u2019<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/health-topics\/one-health\"><em>One Health<\/em><\/a>) has spread, promoting a collaborative, multidisciplinary approach to addressing global health risks from a combined perspective: human, animal and environmental.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:20px\">One figure that justifies this approach: over the last three decades, more than 30 new human pathogens have been detected, 75% of which originated in animals. Also, to stop medicating all the animals on a farm because one of them has been found to be infected. And this must be done while ensuring animal welfare and economic profitability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Within this framework, at IRTA we research and innovate with the aim of helping to transform food systems, and the Catalan agri-food sector in particular, towards a resilient present and a future of sustainable wellbeing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:20px\">Making the most of the opportunities they offer is key for everyone involved in food systems, from farm to table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:20px\">At the same time, many of these emerging technologies were not initially designed for the agri-food sector, which still makes little use of them.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:40%\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:20px\">For example, only a minority of Catalan farms use sensors to collect data on the use of fertilisers, plant protection products or water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:20px\">We need to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul style=\"font-size:20px\"
