The team aims to find out\u00a0<strong>how long this swine virus\u00a0is able to\u00a0survive in the environment and then infect healthy pigs<\/strong>.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> One of the most worrying features of the African swine fever virus is that it survives in the environment, under various temperatures\u00a0or pH conditions, especially when organic matter is present. For example, it has been shown that the virus can remain infected for years in frozen meat. However, recent studies by researchers at the\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ku.dk\/english\/\" target=\"_blank\">University of Copenhagen<\/a>\/Statens Serum\u00a0Institut\u00a0show that the virus is not as resistant as previously thought.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irta.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/daneses-4-1.jpg\" class=\"fancybox irta-lightbox-bridge\" data-fancybox=\"irta-images\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.irta.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/daneses-4-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-33011\" loading=\"lazy\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Working at the Biosafety Unit of IRTA-CReSA. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Is it possible for a healthy pig to become infected with the African swine fever virus after being on a previously occupied farm with sick animals?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To test the extent to which environmental contamination with the virus could be one of the routes of transmission of the disease, animals infected with the virus were placed in three different spaces in the facility. Then, in the same spaces and without cleaning up the remains of the previous animals (faeces, environmental enrichment material, etc.), healthy pigs were placed at different times to see if they became infected from\u00a0this\u00a0contaminated\u00a0environment.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This agreement recognizes the quality of IRTA-CReSA\u2019s\u00a0high level of biosafety infrastructure. On the other hand, researchers in the Animal Health program will take advantage of this exchange to share study and knowledge methods as well as to establish future collaborations with this university.
