The working group \u2018MIXOlepus\u2019, coordinated by the researcher of the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Animal Health Program (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irta.cat\/en\/grup\/animal-health\/\" target=\"_blank\">Animal Health Program<\/a> of IRTA <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Ignacio Badiola (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irta.cat\/en\/personal\/ignacio-badiola-saiz\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ignacio Badiola<\/a> and from the sub-program of endemic diseases, will study the disease with the aim of developing a <strong>vaccine<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recent outbreaks of myxomatosis in the <strong>Iberian hare<\/strong> have triggered a hunting emergency. In the summer of 2018, it was the first time the disease was detected in this wild animal. In view of this situation, the Animal Health Research Center (<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"IRTA-CReSA (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irta.cat\/en\/centre\/irta-cresa\/\" target=\"_blank\">IRTA-CReSA<\/a>), in collaboration with the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mapa.gob.es\/ca\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food<\/a> (MAPA) and the financing of <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"LABIANA Laboratories (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.labiana.com\/es\/\" target=\"_blank\">LABIANA Laboratories<\/a> and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Artemisan Foundation (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fundacionartemisan.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Artemisan Foundation<\/a>, has created the \u2018MIXOlepus\u2019 work and research group \u2018to find solutions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Myxomatosis is an infectious disease caused by a virus that rabbits suffer and that is characterized by the appearance of swelling of mucous membranes and skin. Recently,\u00a0<strong>outbreaks of myxomatosis have been detected for the first time in hares from the Iberian Peninsula<\/strong>. Currently, there are more than 250 confirmed cases in nine autonomous communities: Andalusia, Aragon, Castilla-La Mancha, Castilla y Le\u00f3n, Valencia, Extremadura, Balearic Islands, Madrid and Murcia. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In view of this emergency situation, the objective of \u2018MIXOlepus\u2019 is to look for measures to prevent the disease through <strong>vaccines <\/strong>and the <strong>sustainable management<\/strong> of hare populations. For this, \u2018MIXOlepus\u2019 will focus on knowing in depth the impact of this disease on hare populations. Second, analyze and sequence the virus isolated in hares and study its similarity with the myxomatosis virus described in other animal species. Also, this group will work to develop a vaccine against hare disease and evaluate its degree of effectiveness. On the other hand, \u2018MIXOlepus\u2019 will also disseminate the results and recommendations so that the reserves develop good management practices and sustainable hunting of the species and help monitor the presence of the virus. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fundacionartemisan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Di%CC%81ptico-MIXOlepus.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.irta.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Diptico-Mixoleplus.jpg\" alt=\"d\u00edptic Mixoleplus\" class=\"wp-image-28474\" loading=\"lazy\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Mixoleplus presentation (source: Fundaci\u00f3 Artemisan)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Collaboration of the hunting sector is sought<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The competent authorities in animal health of the Autonomous Communities of the Autonomous Communities will carry out during the next weeks an epidemiological survey in the preserves that have been affected by the disease in hares during the last season, in order to know the real scope of the same and whose results will be analyzed within the working group \u2018MIXOlepus\u2019.
