Josep Usall Rodi\u00e9, Director General of IRTA; Xavier Miarnau, researcher in the Postharvest programme; Joaquim Bellvert, head of the Efficient Water Use in Agriculture programme; and Giulia Marino, representing the ISHS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irta.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/WhatsApp-Image-2026-05-04-at-14.49.23.jpeg\" class=\"fancybox irta-lightbox-bridge\" data-fancybox=\"irta-images\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/www.irta.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/WhatsApp-Image-2026-05-04-at-14.49.23-1024x768.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-138835\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.irta.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/WhatsApp-Image-2026-05-04-at-14.49.23-1024x768.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/www.irta.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/WhatsApp-Image-2026-05-04-at-14.49.23-300x225.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.irta.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/WhatsApp-Image-2026-05-04-at-14.49.23-768x576.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.irta.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/WhatsApp-Image-2026-05-04-at-14.49.23.jpeg 1424w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The opening lecture was delivered by Jordi Salas-Salvad\u00f3, from Universitat Rovira i Virgili, who addressed the nutritional composition of nuts and their health benefits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\">Research and innovation to address the sector\u2019s challenges<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Throughout the different sessions, key topics for the future of almond and pistachio cultivation were addressed, including genetic improvement, agronomic management, plant health, efficient water use, climate change adaptation and new technologies applied to production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the highlighted presentations was that of Pere Ar\u00fas, who explored <em>Prunus<\/em> genomes and the future of these crops, along with several contributions focused on breeding programmes, drought tolerance and new genetic resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The congress also became a space for exchange between research teams, companies and sector professionals, fostering new connections and collaboration opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\">A technical field day to connect research with the field<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the central activities of the symposium was the Field Day, a technical visit that allowed scientific discussions to be brought to the field and enabled participants to learn about applied experiences in production, irrigation and post-harvest handling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The visit began in the Raimat fields, with almond orchards under an SHD system, and continued to Alcan\u00f3, at an Europistachios farm featuring precision irrigation systems and advanced water flow monitoring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Participants then visited the IRTA experimental facilities in the Borges area, with almond trials designed to connect research with agronomic practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The day concluded with a visit to Torrons Vicens, where the processing, sorting and industrial valorisation of the product were showcased.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irta.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/IMG_9818.jpeg\" class=\"fancybox irta-lightbox-bridge\" data-fancybox=\"irta-images\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/www.irta.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/IMG_9818-1024x768.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-138829\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.irta.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/IMG_9818-1024x768.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/www.irta.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/IMG_9818-300x225.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.irta.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/IMG_9818-768x576.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.irta.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/IMG_9818-1536x1152.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/www.irta.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/IMG_9818.jpeg 1550w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\">Closing ceremony and recognition of the best scientific contributions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>After five days of activities, the symposium concluded with a highly positive assessment, both in terms of scientific quality and international participation, with attendees from up to 15 different countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the closing ceremony, the Business Meeting and ISHS Young Talent Awards were presented, with the support of CEBASfruit, Rota Unica and Vimar Equipos, recognising some of the most outstanding scientific contributions of the congress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The awards went to Carlota Bernal (UPM, Spain), Best Poster Award;
