PROCOLZA: Introduction of innovative agronomic practices in winter oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.) cultivation to increase yields and quality

Starting date: 01/07/2021 End date: 30/09/2024
Programme: Sustainable Field Crops

Project funded through Operation 16.01.01 (Cooperation for innovation) through the Rural Development Programme of Catalonia 2014-2022.

Over the last 12 years, the area cultivated with rapeseed in Catalonia has doubled due to its growing interest, especially in obtaining oil. Furthermore, its cultivation has many advantages for the crops that follow it in the rotation: increased yields, combating resistant weeds, reducing the inoculum of diseases, among others. However, rapeseed has many critical moments in its development such as, for example, achieving a good implantation, having sufficient vegetative development during the winter, controlling pests and diseases, flowering time and quantity, harvesting at the optimum time, are the main critical points to control. In view of the growing demand and the difficulties observed, the possibility has been detected of addressing some of these points by improving current practices, either with new technology, new working procedures or by making crop management more efficient.

The main objective of the project is to introduce innovations in agronomic practices that allow maximum crop yield through environmentally sustainable management, through the following specific objectives:

  • Evaluate the influence of sowing date.
  • Determine the optimum sowing rate and planting frame for the crop.
  • To encourage inter-row work with precision hoeing for weed control.
  • Find a good strategy for ash control.
  • Assess crop profitability and grain quality by pre-mowing the crop.
  • Study the influence of fertilisation on the fat content of the grain.
