GENE-SWitCH_Fase2: The regulatory GENomE of SWine and CHicken, functional annotation during development.

Starting date: 01/07/2019 End date: 30/06/2023
Programme: Animal Breeding and Genetics

Financing entities:

GENE-SWitCH is a multi-actor project that will produce new genome information to enable the characterisation of genetic and epigenetic determinants of complex traits in the two monogastric species (chicken and pigs) that are the primary sources of meat worldwide.
The objectives are:
  1. To characterise the functional elements of the genomes (coding and regulatory) of the two main monogastric farm animal species (pig and chicken) with a particular emphasis on tissues of relevance to sustainable production;
  2. Coordination with the global Functional Annotation of Animal Genomes (FAANG) initiative (www.faang.org) to share and disseminate this knowledge as richly annotated high-quality reference genome sequences; and
  3. To enable the use of this knowledge to further improve the effectiveness of genomic selection in the pig and poultry sectors.
