AciDemo: Pond slurry acidification pilot plant for mitigation of ammonia and greenhouse gas emissions
The aim of the AciDemo project is to evaluate the effectiveness of slurry acidification in storage ponds for the mitigation of NH3 emissions in Mediterranean climate conditions, as well as to evaluate the effect of this technique on the emission of other greenhouse gases (CH4, CO2 and N2O). The project involves the installation and fine-tuning of a slurry acidification prototype in a 5 m3 pond. A first test will be carried out during the cold period (autumn-winter), and a second test in the warm period (spring-autumn) in order to determine the effect of temperature on the emissions generated. The approximate duration of each test will be 4 months. During each trial, emissions will be measured periodically, using an ammonia sensor and a dynamic hood, as well as the ambient temperature and slurry composition over time. The results of the monitoring of the acidified pond shall be compared with the emissions of a control pond with the same characteristics and slurry.
The results obtained will be compared with the reference situation (non-acidified pond) in order to determine the percentage of emission reduction achieved by acidification. Finally, the aim is to define and optimise the operational parameters for the application of this technique.
