Building the IRTA of the next decade
We present IRTA’s Corporate Report 2023
The Annual Report 2023 of the Institute of Agrifood Research and Technology, IRTA, is now available for reading. A year in which, without a doubt, the drought marked our activity, as explained in the document by the president of IRTA, the Minister of Climate Action, Food and Rural Agenda of the Government of Catalonia, David Mascort: ‘We have experienced the most serious drought since records exist, both for its duration and intensity, as well as for the surface area affected’. At IRTA, backed by more than three decades of experience in water management research, we have been proposing practical and innovative solutions to professionals in the sector throughout this time.
It was also a year of growth: we increased our income by 11% to over 65 million euros and we now have almost a thousand professionals working in the different IRTA centres.
It was also a year to look ahead: we launched the new Strategic Plan, where we defined our main challenges to build IRTA for the next decade. This plan has been the result of a participatory process and has had the collaboration of a large number of people from inside and outside the organisation, to whom we are very grateful. Soon, you will be able to see in detail what it consists of.
In 2023, we celebrate the fact that we were recognised with the highest rating in the CERCA evaluation, thanks to the joint work and dedication of researchers, research staff and corporate services. We also promoted a major project, the Centre for Innovation in Alternative Proteins (CiPA), which aims to become a benchmark in this field in southern Europe. We made progress in the creation of the Digital Agrolabs, which should contribute, through innovation, to the digitisation of the sector, and we inaugurated the Plant Health HUB, to better tackle emerging pests and diseases of our crops.
In 2023 we presented the new Tutti apple variety, adapted to warm climates, and we published more than 400 scientific articles in prestigious journals. We have worked with a total of 1,107 companies, and we have more than 420 projects underway.
We invite you to discover all this, and even more, in the IRTA Annual Report 2023:
