E-PCV3: Impact of a new porcine circovirus (PCV3) infection in Spain: diagnostic tools development, disease association and prevention and control measures assessment

Starting date: 01/01/2018 End date: 31/12/2020

Financing entities:

Being aware of the enormous animal health consequences and the great economic impact that PCV2 has had on the global swine herd, it is considered necessary and strategic to evaluate the impact of this new porcine circovirus (PCV3) on the Spanish swine herd by:

  1. Diagnostic techniques that allow to study the pathogenesis and dynamics of infection transmission and excretion in farms with different pathologies.
  2. Epidemiological surveillance of PCV3 infection and evaluation of its consequences for the pig sector.
  3. To determine the association with other diseases and / or co-infections with other pathogens of relevant economic importance such as porcine respiratory and reproductive syndrome virus (PRRSV), swine influenza virus (SIV) or Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae.
  4. Establish the presence of different genotypes of the virus, associated with an increase in the pathogenicity of the virus.
  5. To study the evolution of PCV3 in longitudinal studies to evaluate the possible role in the escape to the immune response induced by the host.
